Taking a DeepDyve into the Deep Web

If the latest figures from Internet research companies can be believed, Google serves the needs of most web searchers most of the time. But serious researchers know that the web boasts nooks and crannies that even Google’s spiders can’t reach. DeepDyve thinks it can help solve this problem.

These secret caverns, nicknamed the “deep web,” hide their content behind subscription-based firewalls. Mainly of interest to academics and researchers in specialized fields (such as law or medicine), these databases of information are expensive to build and expensive to maintain. Fortunately, their main clientele includes those with the money to pay for access: lawyers, large libraries, medical schools, major universities and the like.

That’s not quite so helpful for the individual, independent researcher. There are parts of the deep web that don’t require a subscription, but a lone researcher may face other obstacles. Many important scientific papers don’t receive a lot of links, regardless of their scholarly citations. This stymies the search engines’ usual approach to finding documents. So what can you do when you know the information is out there, but you just can’t get to it by the usual means?

This is where DeepDyve comes in. Two bio-informatics scientists who worked on the Human Genome Project founded the company as Infovell in 2005. Their genetics background shows in the algorithm DeepDyve uses. Called “KeyPhrases,” it indexes passages up to 20 keywords in length rather than single keywords. Indeed, rather than focusing on key words, KeyPhrases matches patterns and symbols. DeepDyve CEO William Park told Wired that the algorithm “is really doing pattern matching; it’s not at all language dependent. In fact it’s actually language agnostic.”

This reflects a genetics background in at least two ways. First, think of the length of the human genome; it’s huge, and made up entirely of three-letter “words,” the amino acid codes that together form the chains of proteins that keep our bodies functioning. DeepDyve’s KeyPhrases algorithm uses indexing techniques from the field of genomics; if they work on the human genome, what can they do for the Internet?

Social Media Optimization

What is Social Media Optimization?
The implementation of changes in order to optimize a site so as to increase its visibility in social media searches (on custom search engines like Technorati) is called Social Media Optimization. The website is henceforth included in relevant podcasts, blog sites, bookmarking and vlogs. These are the initiatives of web 2.0. It has opened a new horizon for Internet users by converting 44% users into content creators.
There are different methods of Social Media Optimization. They include ‘RSS feeds’, adding a “Digg this” button, or even blogging. The other methods are incorporating third party community functionalities (this may include YouTube videos and Flickr Photo slides).
Social Media Optimization vs Search Engine Optimization:
There is a difference between Social media Optimization and Search Engine Optimization. The primary function of the SMO is to drive the traffic from sources other than search engine so as to improve search ranking.
Social Media Optimization and Viral Marketing: Social Media Optimization is similar to viral marketing (in some ways). It is a process in which use of networking, sharing websites, photos and videos helps in making friends.
Uses of Social Media Optimization:
There are numerous uses of Social Media Optimization. They are the following:
• Increment of your linkability: The priority of your website is to increase the linkability. There are numerous sites which can be called static. That means, the sites are not regularly updated but are used as storefront. In order to optimize the site, the linkability of the content should be increased. The linkability of content is increased by adding a blog or creating a white paper or though pieces. This can also be done by simple aggregation of the content into a useful format.
• Tagging and Bookmarking made easy: There are many ways of tagging a page. The most effective one is to include a list of relevant tags in the social bookmarking sites and suggested notes for a link. Another way is to use the “add to del.icio.us” (like this) button.
• Rewarding inbound links: The inbound links are immensely helpful in creasing the visibility of your website. It is a barometer for measuring the success of your website. So, when you reward the inbound links, the visibility quotient of your website increases by leaps and bounds.
• Content must Travel: SMO is not just about making changes. It is about your portable content like PDF, video files and audio files. They are submitted to relevant sites so that your content travels beyond the calculated horizon and helps in bring back desired links back to your site.
• Encouraging mash up: RSS (Really Simple Syndication, which is called web feed) syndicates the content and makes it simple for others to create mashups. This can augment your content and drive traffic.

5 Ways To Use Social Media Optimization
Social media optimization is where you use different ways to generate publicity for your Internet business. These ways center on the social media and online communities of people who have common interests such as yours.

In this article let's talk about five ways you can use social media optimization to get the word out about your Internet business.

1. One of the most effective ways to use social media optimization to build your Internet business is to combine blogging and search engine optimization. Optimizing a blog post, so that its search engine friendly is no different than optimizing a web page has been in the past.

They key here is to target longer keyword phrases so that you have a better chance of ending up on page 1 of a search engine faster. To do this just include your keyword phrase as close to the front of the title is possible, and also include it in the body of the article with emphasis such as bolding or underlining.

2. RSS feeds are another excellent way to optimize your blog for social media. Having a large subscriber base to your RSS feed is a great way to instantly keep people up to date on what you are doing in your Internet business every time you post a blog article.

3. Adding a Digg button would be another way that you could optimize your blog for social media purposes. This allows people to vote on the popularity of your blog article and it is one of the largest social directories, so they get a lot of search engine traffic there as well. This can lead to back links to your blog which serve as search engine bait.

4. You Tube videos are an extremely popular way to get your sales message out in a blog post. These can also create viral marketing, which is extremely important when it comes to creating more traffic that you might normally not get. A popular video can be downloaded and watched literally thousands of times as word spreads about it.

5. Sharing photos is another way to get people involved. Websites such as Flickr make this very easy to do. Flickr is an image and video hosting website, web services suite, and online community platform that many bloggers use to share photos online.

This is five ways to use social media optimization to get people involved with your Internet business. It is worth spending time learning how to do this because this form of creating publicity is only going to increase in the future.

These 10 SEO Tactics Bring Me Over 2000 Visitors Daily

No matter how hard some people try to mystify SEO, it is not as complicated as many would lead you to believe. Despite all the techno jargon that many in the field will throw at you: SERPs, SEM, PageRank, Keyword Density, Vertical Search, Algorithms… SEO is really simple to do if you understand some basic concepts and follow some easy steps.
Search Engine Optimization is getting your content listed in all the top positions in Google, Yahoo and MSN for your targeted keywords. When someone does a keyword search in a search engine for your particular subject or niche - you want your site or content to be at the top of the list.
Here are 10 SEO tactics that have worked and are working for me at this moment in time.
1. Quality Content is and always will be your number one factor for getting high rankings and keeping them. You must understand search engines are simply businesses who supply a product like any other company. That product is information. They must offer quality results to anyone using their service to solve a problem, answer a question or to buy a product. The more relevant, the more targeted the search solution they return, the higher the overall quality of their product and the more popular their search engine will become. Providing quality content is vital for SEO success.
2. Keywords are your number one tools for achieving high rankings. You must understand keywords and how they work on the web. You must know how many searches are made each day for your chosen keywords. Sites like Wordtracker and Seobook will give you a rudimentary number of searches. Design your pages around your targeted keywords and don’t forget to do some deep-linking to these pages on your site. Find and build backlinks to these interior keyword pages and not just to your home page or domain URL. Picking keywords with medium to low competition has worked out well for me. So too has using the more targeted and higher converting “long-tail” keywords been very beneficial for me.
3. Onpage Factors and site design will play a major role in the spidering and indexing of your site/content. Make sure all your pages are SEO friendly, made sure all your pages can be reached from your homepage and no pages should be no more than three levels away from it - keeping a sitemap listing all your major pages makes the search engines happy. Make sure you have all your meta tags such as title, description, keywords… are all optimized. (Title = around 65 characters, Description = around 160 characters) Remember, your title and description should not only be keyword targeted but these are the first contact/impression anyone will see of your site - make sure you use them to draw and entice interested visitors to your site and content. Also make sure your title and URL are keyword matched for maximum effect. Having your major keyword in your Domain Name also helps, using a pike | to separate different elements of your title has helped my rankings, so too does having your keyword in the first and last 25 words on your pages.
4. Google will send you the most qualified traffic so concentrate the majority of your SEO efforts on Google. Don’t ignore Yahoo! or MSN but Google is king of search so give it the respect it deserves. With its new browser, Google’s influence will only grow stronger so you must optimize your pages for Google. Use Google’s Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics to fine-tune your pages/content for Google. I also use Google Alerts to keep up on my niche keywords and for comment link-building on the newly created pages Google is indexing.
5. Link Building is still the most effective way to boost your search rankings. Make sure you get backlinks from relevant sites related to your niche market and make sure the ‘anchor text’ is related to your keywords but don’t ignore the text and overall quality of the content linking to you. The anchor text is the underlined/clickable portion of a link. Don’t forget linking is a two-way street, make sure you link out to high quality, high ranked relevant sites in your niche.
6. Article Marketing is a well established method of getting quality backlinks and it still works. Writing short 500 - 700 word informative helpful articles with your backlinks in the resource box is still very effective for getting targeted traffic and backlinks. Longer articles have also worked for me and I use an extensive network of distribution including SubmitYourArticle, Isnare, Thephantomwriters… plus other major online sites. Don’t forget the whole element of blogging and RSS feeds in your article distribution. And always remember you’re also using these articles to pre-sale your content or products. Don’t forget to leverage sites like Squidoo, Hubpages… to increase your rankings and traffic.
7. Onsite Traffic Hubs have worked extremely well for me. These traffic hubs are whole sections of your site devoted to one sub-division of your major theme. For example, if you have a site on Gifts, then wedding gifts could be a separate section. This would be fully fleshed out with extensive pages covering everything dealing with wedding gifts - a self-contained keyword rich portion of your site on wedding gifts. Works similar as a sub-domain but I prefer using a directory to divide it up, such as yourdomain/wedding_gifts. (Most experts suggest always using a hyphen in your urls but underscores have worked fine for me.) Search engines love these keyword/content rich hubs but keep in mind you’re creating content to first satisfy your visitors.
8. WordPress blog software is extremely effective for SEO purposes. WordPress software is easy to install on your site even if you have no experience with installing server-side scripts. Besides search engines love these highly SEO friendly blogs with their well structured content and keyword tagging. I have at least one of these on all my sites to draw in the search engines and get my content indexed and ranked. I also use Blogger (owned by Google), Bloglines and other free blogs to help distribute my content.
9. Social Bookmark/Media Sites are becoming very important on the web. These include a whole range of social sites like MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter… media news sites like Digg, SlashDot, Technorati… you must get your content into this whole mix if you want to take full SEO advantage of Web 2.0 sites. You should be joining these sites and using them. It’s time consuming but it will keep you in the swing of things. One simple thing you must do is to put social bookmark buttons on all your pages so that your visitors can easily bookmark your content for you. You can use a WordPress plug-in or I like using a simple free site/service from Addthis.com which gives me a simple button to put on all my content.
10. Masterplan! Many webmasters and site owners forget to develop or have an overall masterplan/strategy when it comes to SEO. You must have an understanding of what SEO is and what it can do for you and your site. More importantly, you just don’t want SEO - you want effective SEO. In order to achieve effective SEO you must have three things: Relevance, Authority and Conversions.
First, your content/site must be relevant to the topic or niche area you’re pursuing - your content must fit in and be related to all the other sites in your niche. That’s why closely themed sites do so well in the search engines, they give only relevant content to what’s been searched for or discussed.
Second, your content/site must be perceived as an authority site on your subject or niche. Establish this authority position and the search engines will love you and your content. One way is to develop this authority, besides offering superior content, is to form links/partnerships with other perceived authority sites in your field. Always strive to make your site an authority site - tops in your niche - the one site everyone has to check before drawing or forming a conclusion.
Third, conversions should be your main goal of any SEO efforts because you want to convert your targeted traffic into site members, subscribers, buyers or just repeat visitors. If you’re into online marketing, conversions will be the most important element of the whole SEO process because you want buyers, not just visitors coming to your site.
Most of all, you must convince yourself Search Engine Optimization is not difficult, nor is it the equivalent of the online bogeyman as many would like you to believe. Used effectively, SEO can give you the targeted traffic you’re seeking, just follow some of the outlined steps/tactics listed above and you will have SEO working for you and your site in no time at all.

How to get your Website to the First Page of Google Search Results

After years of developing & marketing Websites online, I've read thousands of articles, blogs, commentaries, comments, and you name it, on the subject of search engine optimization (or SEO as it's now traditionally called).
People ask me all the time, questions like, "so should I hire a company to optimize my Website?" Or, "... so what am I doing wrong, I've got this great Website but no one is visiting it; what should I do?" Getting ranked on the first page of Google for any keyword or phrase isn't an easy task. If you're going to take on the challenge of doing this yourself, then be prepared to work! You either have to have a lot of money or a lot of time, and for most people the former doesn't hold true so get ready to put in some "sweat equity". First of all, it's important to understand how the Google Page Rank system works.
A Google Page Rank is a term that was originally derived from a abstract entitled "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine" (see resources below for a link to the online abstract) written by the creators of Google, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page. In it, they described in detail, the inner organic workings of a search engine, and specifically their theorem on the computation of search engine results via a Page Rank System through Google's search engine.
Their argument was that their new computation of popularity based on Hypertext Linking (or the links you would click on to take you from one Web page to another Web page, or one Website to another Website), was a far superior system that would provide better and cleaner search engine results, allowing you to find what you were looking for quicker (and without the human interference that they argued existed in search engines during the mid-90s). So why is this so important? Well, in essence, your popularity on the Web (your Page Rank) will be determined by the number of links that are linking into your site with specific keywords and just how popular the pages are that contain those links into your site (amongst some other elements). While the actual algorithm is beyond the scope of this article, it's simply important to note that in order to get ranked high, you need several "high quality" links with your keywords coming into your site. By "high quality", of course I mean the page that's linking into you must have a high order of importance (relationally speaking on average to other Websites on the Web). For example a link from a site like Yahoo.com will be of much higher quality, then say, a site like myfavoritecookies.com. So how do you get started getting your site to the first page of Google?
Instructions
Things you’ll need:
• A clear understanding of your targeted keywords for your Website.
• An ability to develop content, such as through an online blog.
• A lot of patience. Ranking on the first page of Google will take anywhere between 6 to 12 months (with at least 20-30 hours of work per month).

Step1
Your first step will be to understand the specific keywords that are applicable to your Website. While it may be nice to think as broadly as possible such as (web design, rather than seattle web design), it's important to think niche so that you can get to the top of the results quicker (inverse relationship of less results equals higher likelihood to climb the ranking quicker). For this step, think to yourself, "if I was looking for my business on the Internet, what search phrase would I use?" For example, if you own a vacation rental software business, you wouldn't want to start with the phrase "rental software" but rather "vacation rental software". Knowing the keywords people might search for your business with is critical to the success of your online presence.
Step2
Research your competitors. Check out the sites that rank on the first page of Google and take a careful look at how their site looks by examining their source code through your browser. But be careful not to copy content or META tags as search engines will pick up on this and penalize your site. It's very important to BE ORIGINAL.
Step3
Knowing your keywords and analyzing your competitors is one thing, but designing a site that takes advantage of those keywords is an entirely arduous undertaking in and of itself. There are several criteria that come into play with Website elements to improve the search engine awarness of your Website for your targeted keywords.

These elements are:

a) META Tags

b) Page Title

c) Image ALT tags

d) Website text

e) SITEMAP.

There are several rules to follow when designing and coding your site for search engine awarness (or having a professional do it for you). While the entire spectrum of rules is beyond the scope of this article (but will be addressed in an article to follow), here are a few basic tips (also see the resources below for links to valuable information regarding Web SEO-driven design & coding).

a) Make sure your keywords are seen in your Keyword & Description META Tags at least three times but not more than seven.

b) Make sure that your page title contains your site keywords at least once but not more than three times.

c) Make sure that your site has at least three instances of your keywords in Image ALT tags and make sure that all your images have ALT tags that are descriptive to the actual image.

d) Make sure your Website text has at least three instances of your keywords and not more than seven per Web page (more than that may be considered keyword SPAMING by the search engines).

e) Create a sitemap for your Website (see sitemaps.org for more info).
Step4
We've all heard the cliche that "content is king", and getting ranked high will certainly involve some element of the creation of "content" (in addition to your link popularity). Content can come in the form of articles, well-phrased comments, intuitive blogs, and other Web-based commentary that is carefully worded and properly linked to your site with your keywords (check out sites like blogger.com, wordpress.com, and blogspot.com for online blogs).
Step5
Signup for an analytics software package such as Google analytics (free at www.google.com/analytics/). You'll need to learn how to read analytics to see how your progress of visits to your site is coming. You can also run your own searches on Google daily to see where your site is listing in the search engine results.
Step6
Market, Market, Market. You need to market yourself every day and in every way that you can. Build links to your site on blogs, through comments, through press releases, through your local chamber of commerce publications, in print, on Craigslist, and just about anywhere you can. Also, the more info on your site, the better, so build that content and use it to spread the word about your site.
Step7
Have Patience. This process is going to take you a good 6 to 12 months. You need to build content and create links daily to get ranked high. Remember, Google will need to believe that your site is more important (link wise & content wise) then your competitors for your given keywords, so you have some work ahead of you.
Step8
Use your contacts. If you have contacts at other Websites, try to get them to link to you. Also, find directories online applicable to your Website and try to get listed there with your keywords or just with a link. The more links into your site, the better!

Real black hat secrets unleashed and how to avoid it

SEO techniques are classified by some into two broad categories:

1. White hat SEO: They are techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design and will give lasting results.

2. Black hat SEO: These are those techniques that search engines do not approve of and attempt to minimize the effect of, referred to as spamdexing.

Cloaking: Cloaking or Masking is the SEO process of delivering one version of a page to a user, and a different version to another user such as a search engine. We can custom build a page for the user. If the user is a search engine, we want to give it our best most optimized stuff. If it is a user, we want to give it a pretty page that is tricked out for navigation and usability. Why Cloak? Often when you get a high ranking page under quality keywords the first thing that will happen is your page gets stolen (called Page Jacking)in order to reduce your website rankings.

There are 2 types of cloaking or page swapping:
1. User Agent Cloaking (UA Cloaking)
2. IP Agent Cloaking (IP Cloaking)

User Agent Cloaking
When a visitor (a search engine or a human) requests a page, the cloaking script compares the User Agent text string with its list of search engine User Agent names and then sends the appropriate page. Now, usually if a search engine spider requests a page, the User-Agent variable contains the name of the search engine. Thus, a page designed for the search engines is delivered. But, if the cloaking script does not detect the name of a search engine in the User-Agent variable, it assumes that the request has been made by a human being and delivers the page which was designed for human beings.

IP Agent Cloaking
This is the more complicated method to do cloaking. It involves IP address of search engine spiders. When a visitor (a search engine or a human) requests a page, the cloaking script checks the IP address of the visitor. If the IP address is present in the IP database, the cloaking script knows that the visitor is a search engine and delivers the page optimized for that search engine. And if the IP address is not present in the IP database,
the cloaking script assumes that a human has requested the page, and delivers the page
that is meant for human visitors.

But, you may now ask, how can a Search Engine Detect Page Cloaking?

There are 3 ways, how a search engine detects Page Cloaking or Code swapping. They are:

1. User Agent cloaking method: When a search engine sends a spider to a website without reporting the name of the search engine in the user agent variable. Now, If search engine finds dissimilar pages – one that is accessed by a spider which reports the search engine name and the other spider which doesn’t report, then it is likely to be considered as a page cloaking.

2. IP Based cloaking method: When a search engine sends a spider to a website from a different IP address than the one that the spider has been continuously using so far, it becomes a totally new IP address for that spider which is not there in the database. So, when the page which is delivered to a spider having a known IP address is detected different than the page delivered to the spider with new IP address, then search engine knows that the page cloaking has been used by a site.

3. Human representative: When a human is assigned by search engine to visit a site in order to find out if the site has used cloaking. Now, if he finds that the page delivered to a search engine spider is totally different than the page he has viewed, then he identifies that the site has used cloaking.

Reverse Cloaking:
The DNS stores and relates many types of information with domain names, but most
importantly, it translates domain names (computer hostnames) to IP addresses. At each and every step, the program queries a corresponding DNS server to provide a pointer to the next server which it should consult. However, if that pointer (PTR) is blank or misdirected, search engines-often-regard that site as cloaked.

Off late it was found that many websites were not been seen in the search engine results or were disappearing after a website migrates to a new server. After analysis, it was found that search engines could not resolve Domain Name Systems (DNS) with Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. That’s where IP cloaking commonly begins.

If the DNS server points to 2 or more of your websites which are hosted on the same IP
address, it is called reverse IP cloaking. It is a black hat technique. Why would anyone host a multiple number of websites on the same IP address?
Because, to gain more back links for all those websites. As, most of the web pages of those the websites in this case are interlinked to each other to get more number of incoming links. So, this is considered to be a negative factor in terms of SEO.

So what to do to prevent such cases?

We should host multiple number of our websites in different IP addresses each, and then we can link a few number of pages of each of our site to each other. It is a valid technique in terms of SEO as the search engine treats each of the different IP address as a separate legal entity. So, your websites will now not be penalized as they are hosted on different IP addresses.

So, do not try to cheat search engines by using any of these black hat tactics. If you want lasting results, you should concentrate only on ethical search engine optimization

Explore the Negative Factors or techniques affecting the SEO Industry

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is all about increasing the number of visitors who come to your website and enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website to be search engine and user friendly, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags, backlinks and the submission process.

Following are some of the factors or techniques negatively affecting the SEO industry:
• Dynamically created pages
• Sub Domains
• Cloaking(or Masking)
• Spamdexing
• Link Spamming
• Page Jacking
• Mirrored (or duplicate) websites
• Hidden Text
• Create Doorway pages

1. Dynamically created pages: Dynamically created pages are web pages which have more than one parameter in a website URL.

(e.g.) http://www.seo.com/main.php?category=books&subject=biography

Such type of pages in a website is database driven. Multiple parameters in a dynamic URL (?, .php, .pl, .cgi extension) can often mean that a search engines spider will choose to ignore the document. So, such URLs are not very search engine friendly.
Google is presently able to index dynamically generated pages. However, because their web crawler can easily overwhelm and crash sites serving dynamic content, they limit the amount of dynamic pages they index.
So, Search Engine representatives have long urged website creators to limit dynamic parameters to two, optimally to one so that spiders will easily crawl them.

2. Sub Domains: Many large Web portals and online retailers structure their sites using subdomains (e.g.http://groups.seo.com). A subdomain lets you brand your different specialties with your primary domain name. Subdomains are considered to be independent web sites even though they may share the same IP address. But do check with your Web host to make sure you're sharing an IP address with legitimate sites. Otherwise, this could get your site banned from search engines. Some legitimate sites make the mistake of using duplicate content in their subdomains. This can also make the search engines treat duplicate content in subdomains particularly harshly.

3. Cloaking (or Masking): Cloaking is the SEO process of delivering one version of a page to a user, and a different version to another user such as a search engine. The benefit is code and copyright protection. We can custom build a page for the user. If the user is a search engine, we want to give it our best most optimized stuff. If it is a user, we want to give it a pretty page that is tricked out for navigation and usability.
Mouse-over cloaking is a new SEO technique used widely now-a-days. When a visitor clicks on a website after performing a search query in the search engines, they are directed to a website or web page which is gibberish, but the search engines have indexed it highly. With just the slightest jostle of their mouse, the visitor is quickly re-directed to the site which has allegedly been “SEO optimized.”

4. Spamdexing: Spamdexing or search engine spamming is the practice of deliberately and dishonestly manipulating search engines by SEO's to increase the chance of a website or page being placed close to the beginning of search engine results.
(e.g.) Metatag Stuffing: Repeating keywords in the Meta tags, and using keywords that are unrelated to the website's content.

Keyword Stuffing: Repeated use of a word to increase its frequency on a page. Presently, search engines have the ability to analyze a page for Keyword stuffing and determine whether the frequency is above a "normal" level. The keyword density of a webpage should be between 2- 7%.

5. Link Spamming: The submission of pages that are intended to rank artificially high by various unethical techniques. These can include submitting hundreds of slightly different pages designed to rank high, small invisible text, or word scrambled pages. (e.g.) Link farming: A set of web pages that have been built for the sole purpose of increasing the number of incoming links to a web site. Link farms are a known SEO spam tactic and sites that participate in them are likely to be penalized or banned from the major search engines.

6. Page Jacking: Often when your competitor gets a high ranking page under quality keywords the first thing that will happen is your competitor's page gets stolen (called Page Jacking). It is the SEO process of duplicating a high ranking competitor’s page, but the page is redirected to your website. Many search engines, upon seeing a duplicate page will delete the competitor’s website from the directory leaving the fake page in its place.

7. Mirrored (or Duplicate) websites: Mirrored websites are nothing but, creating duplicate sites having the same images & the content with the same number of pages in both the websites. In this case, one of the website stands a high chance of being rejected by the search engines for indexing.

8. Hidden Text: Hidden text is links with the same background color as that of the website. This SEO spam technique is used to increase your page rank of your website.A user to your site may accidentally land to this hidden link & the page thereafter.

9. Create Doorway pages: A doorway page is simply an additional page on your website that is created to target a specific keyword not related to the website and then submitted to the search engines. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a website and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include websites with unsavory or illegal content.
So be aware of the above explained negative factors while optimizing a website.

How can you compare Squidoo and Digg with Article Directories?

First, let me tell you about what each term is all about.

Squidoo: This is a social media website wherein you can write a topic on anything that you are interested in. It may be a blog, a video clipping, music or for that matter a topic that is close to your heart. This is possible through building your lens. What is Lens? Lens is nothing but, a web page allotted to you by squidoo that can link to your blogs, photos, music links, video clippings and a lot many other things. You might be thinking what is in there for me? This is quite beneficial in many ways.

1. You can share your knowledge with others.
2. Increase your website traffic.
3. Adds to your creditability.
4. Adds to your website visibility, thereby creating a win win situation.
5. Earn income through more website traffic.

Digg: Digg is a community-based popularity social media website with an emphasis on technology and science articles, politics and entertainment. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control.
News, stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page
through a user-based ranking system. Here, one can submit his own story which should be fresh in the related category. More the number of clicks (or diggs) on that story, means more popular your story becomes (means more traffic) and reaches at a higher rank in digg. Thereby, you can make it a favorite article published once you have received a good number of diggs. This differs from the hierarchical editorial system that many other news sites employ.

Article directory: This is a web directory wherein you can submit your articles, topics of your interest for sharing your knowledge with others. This is quite helpful in increasing your website traffic.

The difference between squidoo, digg and other article directories is:
An article that you write and submit in an article directory is not restricted to your website alone or for that matter to only 1 article directory. It can be submitted to 100's and 1000's of other article directories for generating more website traffic, broader publicity.

But, an article that you write for a social media website like squidoo or digg reside on their site and might take a longer time to generate traffic, as compared to an article
submitted in article directories.
